About Me

My photo
I'm a thirty something food-loving professional who has decided to write a food blog rather than bore my Facebook friends with my constant food updates and photos. I love food and cooking and wanted to share my recipes and experiences with fellow-minded people. I am no chef but enjoy good, hearty traditional fayre at home and the occasional treat away from home. I am learning all the time and this blog will hopefully see my skills improve over time. It is documenting my progress if you like and giving me some motivation to improve.

Lazy Sunday

I got up at 8:30am this morning, completely hangover-free, and put on a large pot of filter coffee.  I did some work and pottered about and then bobbed to the supermarket for a couple of things.  I always find something I've forgotten in my online shop.

Dan made porridge when I got back, nice and sloppy with golden syrup.  He made it once before and it was sticky and stodgy and I vowed to never eat it again but he did well this time :)

It was roast chicken this evening, my favourite after beef.  I stuffed the chicken (quite a small one for us) with sage out of the garden, parsely, garlic and a speared lemon and rubbed it with olive oil.  Mr W likes his potatoes cremated so I put them in at the same time as the chicken and they ended up cooking for two hours.

I got a large swede in my organic veggie box this week so decided on mashed carrots and swede, with red cabbage, broccoli and roasted parnsips.  Check out the size of the parsnip!  I love how all my veggie box contents are covered in soil, just makes it seem fresher.

I always put sage and onion in the gravy with chicken, and a dash of white wine.

Colin sat under the over for literally two hours until the chicken came out, bless him.  He got well rewarded for his efforts - Sky didn't want hers so he got seconds.

Mr W said 'delicious' and 'excellent' and he is my biggest critic so I'm happy with that.

Whilst the roast was roasting I decided to try blueberry muffins.  Got a recipe online - seems like a popular search.

I've just had one and they're pretty good but they didn't rise as much as I expected them to, and I left them in longer than it said as they were still a bit pale.  They could do with a little more sugar but, for my first attempt, they are not bad :)  I think I'll send the majority to work with Mr W tomorrow as we will never eat all of them and not enough for my team.

I also tried out my mini caffetiere this evening (no idea where it has come from, just one of those things you find in the back of a cupboard) and it works perfectly, hurrah!  No more nasty instant coffee at work, it makes the thought of Monday morning almost bearable :)  I went out of my way yesterday and went to Asda in Stockport, fighting my way through the horrendous (no doubt Christmas shopping, *groan*) traffic just to get some coffee bags that my boss had the other day.  They're like a tea bag which hangs on the cup by way of cardboard handles and you pour boiling water onto the coffee and it filters through gradually.  They're ok, way better than instant, so bought three boxes.  I guess they will do for emergencies if I forget to get caffetiere coffee.

Apart from not being able to move my arms and shoulders from the gym yesterday, I've had a pretty good day and going to retire now to read the paper and watch some rubbish TV.  Still no cigarettes although I did have half a glass of red wine whilst cooking (still half a bottle left that I opened last night, usually unheard of at Chez Watson) and my head was telling me a cigarette would be rather nice so I stopped drinking and told the devil on my shoulder where to go.  Only a few more weeks and it should get easier...  Must.not.give.in.

Enjoy the last of the weekend!
