About Me

My photo
I'm a thirty something food-loving professional who has decided to write a food blog rather than bore my Facebook friends with my constant food updates and photos. I love food and cooking and wanted to share my recipes and experiences with fellow-minded people. I am no chef but enjoy good, hearty traditional fayre at home and the occasional treat away from home. I am learning all the time and this blog will hopefully see my skills improve over time. It is documenting my progress if you like and giving me some motivation to improve.

Another Lazy Sunday

I was supposed to go to the gym on Sunday morning, that was the plan anyway before Mr W announced he would be home for 11am.  I didn't have anything in to roast so had to take myself off to the supermarket instead of the gym, so I would be back to get cracking on his washing as soon as he arrived ;)  I don't know why that was a winky face, that is what I did!

I don't like buying meat from supermarkets but if I have to I prefer Morrison's.  It's all British I believe, and it is far superior to the other supermarkets for beef.  They even do half decent ribs of beef sometimes.  How disappointing then to find they only had silverside and brisket, first thing on a Sunday morning, so they must have done a killing on Saturday on beef.  I got a free-range corn-fed chicken instead.

I'd purchased a cauliflower from Waitrose with the intention of making myself a nice veggie curry for one but thought I'd push the boat out and do my cauliflower cheese instead - might as well make Mr W appreciate being home just that little bit more :)  I did the usual accoutriments - honey roasted parsnips, roast potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and mashed carrots and swede (I am overrun with the stuff, not sure why Riverford think that we go through a swede a week and keep giving me more, but it is seasonal so I shouldn't complain).  I also had some cheese sauce left over and rather than waste it I cooked some broccoli and made a broccoli cheese for my dinner in the week, and I made the gravy with the cauliflower and broccoli water, plus a little sherry, some onions, sage and stock.

It was pretty damn good, even if I do say so myself.  If you could win awards for making roasts I might even enter, but it's not really pushing my culinary skills in the direction I'd like to be going...

Still, I had a happy husband and one happy fat cat.  Poor Sky didn't get a look in, Colin ate her chicken as well as his own.  Her eye is bad again so don't think she minded too much, she's too busy squinting and feeling sorry for herself poor thing :(

I don't know why I called this post 'Lazy Sunday' considering I did four loads of washing, a huge pile of ironing, cooked dinner, washed the pots and even cleaned the oven.  I can't sit still for long though when there is stuff to do.
