About Me

My photo
I'm a thirty something food-loving professional who has decided to write a food blog rather than bore my Facebook friends with my constant food updates and photos. I love food and cooking and wanted to share my recipes and experiences with fellow-minded people. I am no chef but enjoy good, hearty traditional fayre at home and the occasional treat away from home. I am learning all the time and this blog will hopefully see my skills improve over time. It is documenting my progress if you like and giving me some motivation to improve.

Sabato al Casa Watson

Steak night again but this time we both had sirloin.  The butcher had sold out of rib eye and the sirloin looked so good I decided to forgo my usual fillet.  It was soooo much tastier!

I wanted to do something a bit different with the potatoes so I tried boulangere potatoes.  Not bad for a first try!  You slice the potatoes very finely (I used a side of the grater, kind of like a mandolin but a bit less risky for accident-prone me) and finely slice an onion. Grease a casserole dish and add a layer of potatoes, then  a fine scattering of onions, and then potatoes and so on until the last layer which should be potato.  Season each layer as you go then add 150ml chicken stock at the end.  Bake at Gas 4 for 45 minutes covered in foil then remove the foil and turn the oven up to brown the top.  I used round cutters to serve.

I served with leeks fried in butter, cavolo nero and carrots and also did some garlic mushrooms with red onions and parsley which I served on top of the steak.  Delicious!  A very nice Bordeaux provided a good accompaniment.  Looking forward to my next case of fine wines on Christmas Day - a tradition between my Dad and me :)
