About Me

My photo
I'm a thirty something food-loving professional who has decided to write a food blog rather than bore my Facebook friends with my constant food updates and photos. I love food and cooking and wanted to share my recipes and experiences with fellow-minded people. I am no chef but enjoy good, hearty traditional fayre at home and the occasional treat away from home. I am learning all the time and this blog will hopefully see my skills improve over time. It is documenting my progress if you like and giving me some motivation to improve.

Sumptuous Sunday Roast

This morning I took myself off to the gym for Boxfit but the instructor didn't turn up.  Apparently there was only myself booked onto it so he probably decided not to bother.  Can't blame him given the weather.  I went up to the gym instead and did 10k on the treadmill, 400 crunches and 50 press ups.  I definitely deserved my food today!  We started with pain au chocolat (x 2) and a Mr W special banana milkshake (bananas, milk and ice cream).  Mmmmmm.

For dinner, I cooked pork.  There wasn't any crackling but not to worry, it's not like we're starved of fat at Chez Watson ;)

I also made some veggie stock from the bits of veg that I cut off and froze it in ice cube trays.  It's really easy to make, I used broccoli stems, carrots, cabbage stems, onions, celery, leeks and added water, bay leaves, a clove, and some peppercorns.  Simmer until the veg is cooked then strain and pour into an ice cube tray.

For dinner, I did carrots (with lots of butter), honey roasted parsnips, roast potatoes, tender stem broccoli, spring greens, leeks and a cider and sage gravy.  I also had some parsnip puree and apple sauce in the freezer, both home-made, so defrosted and warmed those.  I also added a bulb of our home-grown garlic to the roasting tray to give the potatoes some extra flavour.

We had a special bottle of wine left over from Christmas, which was produced in a vineyard near to where we stayed in New Zealand on our honeymoon - Nautilus.  It is a very nice Sauvignon Blanc and I decided tonight would be a good time to open it.

It was (and still is, not finished yet!) absolutely delicious.

Thoroughly enjoyed my Sunday roast tonight, completely guilt-free, and a lovely end to a good weekend at Chez Watson.

I shall finish with a strange but cool photo that I took this morning from my front room window - a rose surviving in the snow.  Strange times! Hope you've all had a great weekend too x
